There are several legends about Nunisi origin. According to one of them Nunisi and its curative water was discovered by David Aghmashenebeli. The legend says that when the king David was on his way back home from a struggle, the horses tired from riding with ulcerated skin had rest in Nunisi water that magically cured the horses.
There is a legend as well about the Church of the Mother of God. It says that King Tamar on her way back home from a struggle, had a rest in the vicinity of Nunisi, she liked places in the neighborhood, and ordered to build a church.
Two three km away from Nunisi there is a cave, according to one legend it is Noah’s arch. As per the legend Noah’s arch was a cupola and not a ship. And that water level rose, some air was left below the cupola where there is a cave now, by means of which Noah saved the chosen creatures.
According to folk story people started to use Nunisi water for curative purposes in the first half of IX century. Local population noticed that mineral water cured mange in domestic animals. People tested the water upon themselves the result was awesome, word of its medicinal properties was spread within all Georgia.
Village Nunisi and Nunisi water is mentioned by Vakhushti Batonishvili as water which is extremely pleasant and useful.
